Parke County lies in the western part of Indiana along the Wabash River and was formed in 1821 from a portion of Vigo county. It was named in honor of Benjamin Parke, who was the first member of Congress from the territory. It has 444.7 square miles of land area and is the 23rd largest county in Indiana by total area. With it's 31 covered bridges, Parke County is the No. 1 county with the most covered bridges, in the United States, and is famous for it's Covered Bridge Festival, which runs for 10 days every October. According to the 2020 census, the population in Parke County was 16,156 and had a population density of about 39 inhabitants per square mile. It is divided into 13 townships which provide varying local services and the county seat is Rockville.
